Native American Folklore As Mythology Essay - 1066 Words
Throughout history, and all over the world, mythology has been developed as a way of explaining the unknown and coping with oneââ¬â¢s existence. Why does the sun shine? Well, seemingly, to generations past, something is controlling the universe, so there must be a god in charge of the sun and many other natural phenomenon. During the creation of Native American myths, ââ¬Å"there was much in the way of free-range food, but hunting wasnt as easy as getting up in the morning, taking a stroll and shooting a few passing bison with your bowâ⬠(Godchecker). Times were tough, ââ¬Å"even Plains societies who lived off the prolific buffalo fell under the threat of starvation at timesâ⬠(Godchecker). However, the trickster ââ¬Å"is also a culture hero, someone often with godlike power who long, long ago helped to establish the order of the world that we know todayâ⬠(72). Though, his folly caused him to forget his purpose of ridding the earth of evil entities, he is still a staple in Native American tales. Every tribe has their own version of the trickster! The Winnebego trickster, also known as Wakjankaga, was ââ¬Å"sent to instruct or destroy monsters who would be harmful to the people (a mission he foolishly forgets)â⬠(73). He fails his mission because he becomes too consumed with ââ¬Å"The peopleâ⬠¦These who walk on two legs, because he was fascinated by themâ⬠and so, ââ¬Å"he started to tease themâ⬠(77). The Center For Human Development - 1282 Words
I interviewed Takisa Smith, Director of the Center for Human Developmentââ¬â¢s (CHD) Watershed Recovery Center for women in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Her facility accommodates twenty-five women at the beginning stages of recovery and can also accommodate those who have been civilly committed, are pregnant, or post-partum and their infants (http://chd.org/adult-services/addiction-recovery-services/watershed-recovery-center-women/). I was lucky enough to know Takisa through my significant other (Leshawnda Underwoodââ¬â¢s mother). Because of our preexisting relationship the interview was very laid back. A Director must be a source of encouragement for clients and fellow staff, but also be their lead disciplinary, and leader. Discussing all that a Director must juggle, I assumed clients and patients would be the largest stressor. When I asked Takisa about her workplace stressors she pointed to coworkers as a large source of frustration. She inherited a staff that had little to no interest in team building. She also has employees with lived experience meaning that in some way these employees have personal experience with addiction and employees with lived experience feel as though their path to sobriety and wellness is the only path there is. Both categories of employees are not willing to expand their knowledge. Unlike other nine-to-five or rotating shift positions theyââ¬â¢re dealing with a vulnerable class of individuals that require extra care and attention. Of course with so much negativity highlighted I was curious about positive aspects, I asked if there were perks or anything she liked about being a Director? She really enjoys seeing both clients excel. Nothing is better than someone successfully graduating the program or continuing

We will write a custom essay sample on The Vampire Diaries: Dark Reunion Chapter Three or any similar topic only for you Order Now ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s your house, Caroline. Everybody grab hands and you lead us to the front door.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠Caroline said. She didnââ¬â¢t sound as frightened as everybody else. That was the advantage to having no imagination, Bonnie thought. You couldnââ¬â¢t picture the terrible things that were going to happen to you. She felt better with Meredithââ¬â¢s narrow, cold hand grasping hers. She fumbled on the other side and caught Carolineââ¬â¢s, feeling the hardness of long fingernails. She could see nothing. Her eyes should be adjusting to the dark by now, but she couldnââ¬â¢t make out even a glimmer of light or shadow as Caroline started leading them. There was no light coming through the windows from the street; the power seemed to be out everywhere. Caroline cursed, running into some piece of furniture, and Bonnie stumbled against her. Vickie was whimpering softly from the back of the line. ââ¬Å"Hang on,â⬠whispered Sue. ââ¬Å"Hang on, Vickie, weââ¬â¢ll make it.â⬠They made slow, shuffling progress in the dark. Then Bonnie felt tile under her feet. ââ¬Å"This is the front hall,â⬠Caroline said. ââ¬Å"Stay here a minute while I find the door.â⬠Her fingers slipped out of Bonnieââ¬â¢s. ââ¬Å"Caroline! Donââ¬â¢t let go-where are you? Caroline, give me your hand!â⬠Bonnie cried, groping frantically like a blind person. Out of the darkness something large and moist closed around her fingers. It was a hand. It wasnââ¬â¢t Carolineââ¬â¢s. Bonnie screamed. Vickie immediately picked it up, shrieking wildly. The hot, moist hand was dragging Bonnie forward. She kicked out, struggling, but it made no difference. Then she felt Meredithââ¬â¢s arms around her waist, both arms, wrenching her back. Her hand came free of the big one. And then she was turning and running, just running, only dimly aware that Meredith was be-side her. She wasnââ¬â¢t at all aware that she was still screaming until she slammed into a large armchair that stopped her progress, and she heard herself. ââ¬Å"Hush! Bonnie, hush, stop!â⬠Meredith was shaking her. They had slid down the back of the chair to the floor. ââ¬Å"Something had me! Something grabbed me, Meredith!â⬠ââ¬Å"I know. Be quiet! Itââ¬â¢s still around,â⬠Meredith said. Bonnie jammed her face into Meredithââ¬â¢s shoulder to keep from screaming again. What if it was here in the room with them? Seconds crawled past, and the silence pooled around them. No matter how Bonnie strained her ears, she could hear no sound except their own breathing and the dull thudding of her heart. Bonnie started to nod miserably, then abruptly lifted her head. ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s Vickie?â⬠she whispered hoarsely. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. I had to let go of her hand to pull you away from that thing. Letââ¬â¢s move.â⬠Bonnie held her back. ââ¬Å"But why isnââ¬â¢t she screaming?â⬠A shudder went through Meredith. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, God. Oh, God. We canââ¬â¢t leave her, Meredith.â⬠ââ¬Å"We have to.â⬠ââ¬Å"We canââ¬â¢t. Meredith, I made Caroline invite her. She wouldnââ¬â¢t be here except for me. We have to get her out.â⬠There was a pause, and then Meredith hissed, ââ¬Å"All right! But you pick the strangest times to turn noble, Bonnie.â⬠A door slammed, causing both of them to jump. Then there was a crashing, like feet on stairs, Bonnie thought. And briefly, a voice was raised. ââ¬Å"Vickie, where are you? Donââ¬â¢t-Vickie, no! No!â⬠ââ¬Å"That was Sue,â⬠gasped Bonnie, jumping up. ââ¬Å"From upstairs!â⬠ââ¬Å"Why donââ¬â¢t we have a flashlight?â⬠Meredith was raging. Bonnie knew what she meant. It was too dark to go running blindly around this house; it was too frightening. There was a primitive panic hammering in her brain. She needed light, any light. She couldnââ¬â¢t go fumbling into that darkness again, exposed on all sides. She couldnââ¬â¢t do it. Nevertheless, she took one shaky step away from the chair. ââ¬Å"Come on,â⬠she gasped, and Meredith came with her, step by step, into the blackness. Bonnie kept expecting that moist, hot hand to reach out and grab her again. Every inch of her skin tingled in anticipation of its touch, and especially her own hand, which she had outstretched to feel her way. Then she made the mistake of remembering the dream. Instantly, the sickly sweet smell of garbage overwhelmed her. She imagined things crawling out of the ground and then remembered Elenaââ¬â¢s face, gray and hairless, with lips shriveled back from grinning teeth. If that thing grabbed hold of herâ⬠¦ I canââ¬â¢t go any farther; I canââ¬â¢t, I canââ¬â¢t, she thought. Iââ¬â¢m sorry for Vickie, but I canââ¬â¢t go on. Please, just let me stop here. It was a whole series of sounds, actually, but they all came so close together that they blended into one terrible swell of noise. First there was screaming, Sueââ¬â¢s voice screaming, ââ¬Å"Vickie! Vickie! No!â⬠Then a resonant crash, the sound of glass shattering, as if a hundred windows were breaking at once. And over that a sustained scream, on a note of pure, exquisite terror. Then it all stopped. ââ¬Å"What was it? What happened, Meredith?â⬠ââ¬Å"Something bad.â⬠Meredithââ¬â¢s voice was taut and choked. ââ¬Å"Something very bad. Bonnie, let go. Iââ¬â¢m going to see.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not alone, youââ¬â¢re not,â⬠Bonnie said fiercely. They found the staircase and made their way up it. When they reached the landing, Bonnie could hear a strange and oddly sickening sound, the tinkle of glass shards falling. And then the lights went on. It was too sudden; Bonnie screamed involuntarily. Turning to Meredith she almost screamed again. Meredithââ¬â¢s dark hair was disheveled and her cheekbones looked too sharp; her face was pale and hollow with fear. Tinkle, tinkle. It was worse with the lights on. Meredith was walking toward the last door down the hall, where the noise was coming from. Bonnie followed, but she knew suddenly, with all her heart, that she didnââ¬â¢t want to see inside that room. Meredith pulled the door open. She froze for a minute in the doorway and then lunged quickly inside. You read "The Vampire Diaries: Dark Reunion Chapter Three" in category "Essay examples" Bonnie started for the door. ââ¬Å"Oh, my God, donââ¬â¢t come any farther!â⬠Bonnie didnââ¬â¢t even pause. She plunged into the doorway and then pulled up short. At first glance it looked as if the whole side of the house was gone. The French windows that connected the master bedroom to the balcony seemed to have exploded outward, the wood splintered, the glass shattered. Little pieces of glass were hanging precariously here and there from the remnants of the wood frame. They tinkled as they fell. Diaphanous white curtains billowed in and out of the gaping hole in the house. In front of them, in silhouette, Bonnie could see Vickie. She was standing with her hands at her sides, as motionless as a block of stone. ââ¬Å"Vickie, are you okay?â⬠Bonnie was so relieved to see her alive that it was painful. ââ¬Å"Vickie?â⬠Vickie didnââ¬â¢t turn, didnââ¬â¢t answer. Bonnie maneuvered around her cautiously, looking into her face. Vickie was staring straight ahead, her pupils pinpoints. She was sucking in little whistling breaths, chest heaving. Shuddering, Bonnie reeled away. Meredith was on the balcony. She turned as Bonnie reached the curtains and tried to block the way. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t look. Donââ¬â¢t look down there,â⬠she said. Down where? Suddenly Bonnie understood. She shoved past Meredith, who caught her arm to stop her on the edge of a dizzying drop. The balcony railing had been blasted out like the French windows and Bonnie could see straight down to the lighted yard below. On the ground there was a twisted figure like a broken doll, limbs askew, neck bent at a grotesque angle, blond hair fanned on the dark soil of the garden. It was Sue Carson. And throughout all the confusion that raged afterward, two thoughts kept vying for dominance in Bonnieââ¬â¢s mind. One was that Caroline would never have her foursome now. And the other was that it wasnââ¬â¢t fair for this to happen on Meredithââ¬â¢s birthday. It just wasnââ¬â¢t fair. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry, Meredith. I donââ¬â¢t think sheââ¬â¢s up to it right now.â⬠Bonnie heard her fatherââ¬â¢s voice at the front door as she listlessly stirred sweetener into a cup of chamomile tea. She put the spoon down at once. What she wasnââ¬â¢t up to was sitting in this kitchen one minute longer. She needed out. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll be right there, Dad.â⬠Meredith looked almost as bad as she had last night, face peaked, eyes shadowed. Her mouth was set in a tight line. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll just go out driving for a little while,â⬠Bonnie said to her father. ââ¬Å"Maybe see some of the kids. After all, youââ¬â¢re the one who said it isnââ¬â¢t dangerous, right?â⬠What could he say? Mr. McCullough looked down at his petite daughter, who stuck out the stubborn chin sheââ¬â¢d inherited from him and met his gaze squarely. He lifted his hands. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s almost four oââ¬â¢clock now. Be back before dark,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"They want it both ways,â⬠Bonnie said to Meredith on the way to Meredithââ¬â¢s car. Once inside, both girls immediately locked their doors. As Meredith put the car in gear she gave Bonnie a glance of grim understanding. ââ¬Å"Your parents didnââ¬â¢t believe you, either.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, they believe everything I told them-except anything important. How can they be so stupid?â⬠Meredith laughed shortly. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve got to look at it from their point of view. They find one dead body without a mark on it except those caused by the fall. They find that the lights were off in the neighborhood because of a malfunction at Virginia Electric. They find us, hysterical, giving answers to their questions that must have seemed pretty weird. Who did it? Some monster with sweaty hands. How do we know? Our dead friend Elena told us through a Ouija board. Is it any wonder they have their doubts?â⬠ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re forgetting already,â⬠Meredith replied softly. ââ¬Å"You predicted it yourself. Life has gone back to normal, and everybody in Fellââ¬â¢s Church feels safer that way. They all feel like theyââ¬â¢ve woken up from a bad dream, and the last thing they want is to get sucked in again.â⬠Bonnie just shook her head. ââ¬Å"And so itââ¬â¢s easier to believe that a bunch of teenage girls got riled up playing with a Ouija board, and that when the lights went out they just freaked and ran. And one of them got so scared and confused she ran right out a window.â⬠There was a silence and then Meredith added, ââ¬Å"I wish Alaric were here.â⬠Normally, Bonnie would have given her a dig in the ribs and answered, ââ¬Å"So do I,â⬠in a lecherous voice. Alaric was one of the handsomest guys sheââ¬â¢d ever seen, even if he was a doddering twenty-two years old. Now, she just gave Meredithââ¬â¢s arm a disconsolate squeeze. ââ¬Å"Canââ¬â¢t you call him somehow?â⬠ââ¬Å"In Russia? I donââ¬â¢t even know where in Russia he is now.â⬠Bonnie bit her lip. Then she sat up. Meredith was driving down Lee Street, and in the high school parking lot they could see a crowd. She and Meredith exchanged glances, and Meredith nodded. ââ¬Å"We might as well,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s see if theyââ¬â¢re any smarter than their parents.â⬠Bonnie could see startled faces turning as the car cruised slowly into the lot. When she and Meredith got out, people moved back, making a path for them to the center of the crowd. Caroline was there, clutching her elbows with her hands and shaking back her auburn hair distractedly. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re not going to sleep in that house again until itââ¬â¢s repaired,â⬠she was saying, shivering in her white sweater. ââ¬Å"Daddy says weââ¬â¢ll take an apartment in Heron until itââ¬â¢s over.â⬠ââ¬Å"What difference does that make? He can follow you to Heron, Iââ¬â¢m sure,â⬠said Meredith. Caroline turned, but her green catââ¬â¢s eyes wouldnââ¬â¢t quite meet Meredithââ¬â¢s. ââ¬Å"Who?â⬠she said vaguely. ââ¬Å"Oh, Caroline, not you too!â⬠Bonnie exploded. Her eyes came up and for an instant Bonnie saw how frightened she was. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t take any more.â⬠As if she had to prove her words that minute, she pushed her way through the crowd. ââ¬Å"Let her go, Bonnie,â⬠Meredith said. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s no use.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s no use,â⬠said Bonnie furiously. If Caroline, who knew, was acting this way, what about the other kids? She saw the answer-in the faces around her. Everybody looked scared, as scared as if she and Meredith had brought some loathsome disease with them. As if she and Meredith were the problem. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t believe this,â⬠Bonnie muttered. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t believe it either,â⬠said Deanna Kennedy, a friend of Sueââ¬â¢s. She was in the front of the crowd, and she didnââ¬â¢t look as uneasy as the others. ââ¬Å"I talked with Sue yesterday afternoon and she was so up, so happy. She canââ¬â¢t be dead.â⬠Deanna began to sob. Her boyfriend put an arm around her, and several other girls began to cry. The guys in the crowd shifted, their faces rigid. Bonnie felt a little surge of hope. ââ¬Å"And sheââ¬â¢s not going to be the only one dead,â⬠she added. ââ¬Å"Elena told us that the whole town is in danger. Elena saidâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Despite herself Bonnie heard her voice failing. She could see it in the way their eyes glazed up when she mentioned Elenaââ¬â¢s name. Meredith was right; theyââ¬â¢d put everything that had happened last winter behind them. They didnââ¬â¢t believe anymore. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s wrong with you all?â⬠she said helplessly, wanting to hit something. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t really think Sue threw herself off that balcony!â⬠ââ¬Å"People are saying-â⬠Deannaââ¬â¢s boyfriend started and then shrugged defensively. ââ¬Å"Well-you told the police Vickie Bennett was in the room, right? And now sheââ¬â¢s off her head again. And just a little bit earlier youââ¬â¢d heard Sue shouting, ââ¬ËNo, Vickie, no!ââ¬â¢?â⬠Bonnie felt as if the wind had been knocked out of her. ââ¬Å"You think that Vickie- oh, God, youââ¬â¢re out of your mind! Listen to me. Something grabbed my hand in that house, and it wasnââ¬â¢t Vickie. And Vickie had nothing to do with throwing Sue off that balcony.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s hardly strong enough, for one thing,â⬠Meredith said pointedly. ââ¬Å"She weighs about ninety-five pounds soaking wet.â⬠Somebody from the back of the crowd muttered about insane people having superhuman strength. ââ¬Å"Vickie has a psychiatric record-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Elena told us it was a guy!â⬠Bonnie almost shouted, losing her battle with self-control. The faces tilted toward her were shuttered, unyielding. Then she saw one that made her chest loosen. ââ¬Å"Matt! Tell them you believe us.â⬠Matt Honeycutt was standing on the fringe with his hands in his pockets and his blond head bowed. Now he looked up, and what Bonnie saw in his blue eyes made her draw in her breath. They werenââ¬â¢t hard and shuttered like everyone elseââ¬â¢s, but they were full of a flat despair that was just as bad. He shrugged without taking his hands from his pockets. Bonnie, for one of the first times in her life, was speechless. Matt had been upset ever since Elena died, but thisâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"He does believe it, though,â⬠Meredith was saying quickly, capitalizing on the moment. ââ¬Å"Now what have we got to do to convince the rest of you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Channel Elvis for us, maybe,â⬠said a voice that immediately set Bonnieââ¬â¢s blood boiling. Tyler. Tyler Smallwood. Grinning like an ape in his overexpensive Perry Ellis sweater, showing a mouthful of strong white teeth. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not as good as psychic e-mail from a dead Homecoming Queen, but itââ¬â¢s a start,â⬠Tyler added. Matt always said that grin was asking for a punch in the nose. But Matt, the only guy in the crowd with close to Tylerââ¬â¢s physique, was staring dully at the ground. ââ¬Å"Shut up, Tyler! You donââ¬â¢t know what happened in that house,â⬠Bonnie said. ââ¬Å"Well, neither do you, apparently. Maybe if you hadnââ¬â¢t been hiding in the living room, youââ¬â¢d have seen what happened. Then somebody might believe you.â⬠Bonnieââ¬â¢s retort died on her tongue. She stared at Tyler, opened her mouth, and then closed it. Tyler waited. When she didnââ¬â¢t speak, he showed his teeth again. ââ¬Å"For my money, Vickie did it,â⬠he said, winking at Dick Carter, Vickieââ¬â¢s ex-boyfriend. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s a strong little babe, right, Dick? She could have done it.â⬠He turned and added deliberately over his shoulder, ââ¬Å"Or else that Salvatore guy is back in town.â⬠ââ¬Å"You creep!â⬠shouted Bonnie. Even Meredith cried out in frustration. Because of course at the very mention of Stefan pandemonium ensued, as Tyler must have known it would. Everyone was turning to the person next to them and exclaiming in alarm, horror, excitement. It was primarily the girls who were excited. Effectively, it put an end to the gathering. People had been edging away surreptitiously before, and now they broke up into twos and threes, arguing and hastening off. Bonnie gazed after them angrily. ââ¬Å"Supposing they did believe you. What did you want them to do, anyway?â⬠Matt said. She hadnââ¬â¢t noticed him beside her. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. Something besides just standing around waiting to be picked off.â⬠She tried to look him in the face. ââ¬Å"Matt, are you all right?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. Are you?â⬠Bonnie thought. ââ¬Å"No. I mean, in one way Iââ¬â¢m surprised Iââ¬â¢m doing as well as I am, because when Elena died, I just couldnââ¬â¢t deal. At all. But then I wasnââ¬â¢t as close to Sue, and besidesâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t know!â⬠She wanted to hit something again. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just all too much!â⬠Bonnie thought. ââ¬Å"No. I mean, in one way Iââ¬â¢m surprised Iââ¬â¢m doing as well as I am, because when Elena died, I just couldnââ¬â¢t deal. At all. But then I wasnââ¬â¢t as close to Sue, and besidesâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t know!â⬠She wanted to hit something again. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just all too much!â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, Iââ¬â¢m mad.â⬠Suddenly Bonnie understood the feelings sheââ¬â¢d been having all day. ââ¬Å"Killing Sue wasnââ¬â¢t just wrong, it was evil. Truly evil. And whoever did it isnââ¬â¢t going to get away with it. That would be-if the world is like that, a place where that can happen and go unpunishedâ⬠¦ if thatââ¬â¢s the truthâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ She found she didnââ¬â¢t have a way to finish. ââ¬Å"Then what? You donââ¬â¢t want to live here anymore? What if the world is like that?â⬠His eyes were so lost, so bitter. Bonnie was shaken. But she said staunchly, ââ¬Å"I wonââ¬â¢t let it be that way. And you wonââ¬â¢t either.â⬠He simply looked at her as if she were a kid insisting there was so a Santa Claus. Meredith spoke up. ââ¬Å"If we expect other people to take us seriously, weââ¬â¢d better take ourselves seriously. Elena did communicate with us. She wanted us to do something. Now if we really believe that, weââ¬â¢d better figure out what it is.â⬠Mattââ¬â¢s face had flexed at the mention of Elena. You poor guy, youââ¬â¢re still as much in love with her as ever, thought Bonnie. I wonder if anything could make you forget her? She said, ââ¬Å"Are you going to help us, Matt?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll help,â⬠Matt said quietly. ââ¬Å"But I still donââ¬â¢t know what it is youââ¬â¢re doing.â⬠ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re going to stop that murdering creep before he kills anybody else,â⬠said Bonnie. It was the first time sheââ¬â¢d fully realized herself that this was what she meant to do. ââ¬Å"Alone? Because you are alone, you know.â⬠ââ¬Å"We are alone,â⬠Meredith corrected. ââ¬Å"But thatââ¬â¢s what Elena was trying to tell us. She said we had to do a summoning spell to call for help.â⬠ââ¬Å"An easy spell with only two ingredients,â⬠Bonnie remembered from her dream. She was getting excited. ââ¬Å"And she said sheââ¬â¢d already told me the ingredients-but she hadnââ¬â¢t.â⬠ââ¬Å"Last night she said there were corrupting influences distorting her communication,â⬠Meredith said. ââ¬Å"Now to me that sounds like what was happening in the dream. Do you think it really was Elena you were drinking tea with?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠Bonnie said positively. ââ¬Å"I mean, I know we werenââ¬â¢t really having a mad tea party at Warm Springs, but I think Elena was sending that message into my brain. And then partway through something else took over and pushed her out. But she fought, and for a minute at the end she got back control.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay. Then that means we have to concentrate on the beginning of the dream, when it was still Elena communicating with you. But if what she was saying was already being distorted by other influences, then maybe it came out weird. Maybe it wasnââ¬â¢t something she actually said, maybe it was something she didâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"Hair! I asked her who did hers, and we talked about it, and she said, ââ¬ËHair is very important.ââ¬â¢ And Meredith-when she was trying to tell us the ingredients last night, the first letter of one of them was H!â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s it!â⬠Meredithââ¬â¢s dark eyes were flashing. ââ¬Å"Now we just have to think of the other one.â⬠ââ¬Å"But I know that too!â⬠Bonnieââ¬â¢s laughter bubbled up exuberantly. ââ¬Å"She told me right after we talked about hair, and I thought she was just being strange. She said, ââ¬ËBlood is important too.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å" Meredith shut her eyes in realization. ââ¬Å"And last night, the Ouija board said ââ¬ËBloodblood-blood.ââ¬â¢ I thought it was the other thing threatening us, but it wasnââ¬â¢t,â⬠she said. She opened her eyes. ââ¬Å"Bonnie, do you think thatââ¬â¢s really it? Are those the ingredients, or do we have to start worrying about mud and sandwiches and mice and tea?â⬠ââ¬Å"Those are the ingredients,â⬠Bonnie said firmly. ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re the kind of ingredients that make sense for a summoning spell. Iââ¬â¢m sure I can find a ritual to do with them in one of my Celtic magic books. We just have to figure out the person weââ¬â¢re supposed to summonâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Something struck her, and her voice trailed off in dismay. ââ¬Å"I was wondering when youââ¬â¢d notice,â⬠Matt said, speaking for the first time in a long while. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t know who it is, do you?â⬠How to cite The Vampire Diaries: Dark Reunion Chapter Three, Essay examples

Analysis on Friday Night Lights free essay sample
Its funny when i can watch a movie and compare it to a piece of literature. When you can compare a movie to a book, it means they share the same philosophy. The only difference is the way one another is viewed. None the less, books and movies can still have a powerful meaning together. Teaching the world of friendship and love through heartfelt words and cinematic productions. Ralph W. Emerson wrote his own theories and opinions . Except, he put it in a book to be read years into the future. I have read the book myself and can only envision how it can be compared to hundreds of movies. One that specifically comes to mind is the movie, Friday Night Lights. This movie shares many characteristics to Emerson himself. For example, the view of great expectations and the love a person shares with another. In this movie, everything has a purpose or reason behind it, but the road must be crossed in order to see those reasons. Friday Night Lights is a good example of showing how to be a friend, showing what love might intail, learning to experience life one step at a time and developing a good sense of moral character. Friendship, a word that is best learned through experience. This movie does more than show friendship, it shows how important having friends actually is. Everybody has a friend, some have several, but in a football team, friendship is strong. These players are tested everyday with new challenges on the football field, also, in everyday life. Just like when a quarterback cant complete a pass or a student cant get a passing grade, when it matters the most. Sometimes it gets overwhelming, so this team knows to be there for one another in a tough time. In the same regard, friendship help teams work together. Becoming more than just students, but a whole unit. Without this kind of experience, these players would not know what its like to play at a championship level. The Permian Panthers know what its like to compete at this level, because of one huge x-factor, the coach. This coach teaches the team that wins on the board and touchdowns in the end zone doesnt bring happiness. People do, with their affection towards everybody surrounding them. These players are not only training to better their athletic talent, they are receiving a gift. The gift of wisdom, one of the best gifts of all. This goes way beyond the game of football. Friendship is important outside of the football field. Everyone has problems and we all need someone to listen to them. When we are sad, mad or even confused. This is a critical point in many peoples life. When all they need is just a friend. Some one to sit down and give the reality of the situation. In this case, thats what friends are for. This pertains to Emerson in so many ways. He believes that with expressing our affection, our intellectual and active powers increase. This is a perfect example of a football team that needs to show friendship and trust to achieve the ultimate goal. Caring about every person in the group and where they want to go. If every player were in touch with their personal side in unison, its almost as if a deadly force meets an immovable object. You can keep trying to break this team down, but it wont budge. What a coincidence how the same moral values that are in this movie, Emerson shared with his generation in the 1800s. He thought the same as we do til this very day, over 200 years later. Giving the assumption Emerson was way ahead of his time. Sometimes it sounds girly to show love in a locker room. So guys dont like to use the word love. The reality is, love is what every one of these players share with each other. Yea, of coarse, it all comes in time if your on a football team. But if you show your true self, love will be there for everyone to share with you.. The coach of this football team realizes that when they get to the biggest game of them all, the championship game, that life is not about winning. Its about love for your teammates, love for the game and most importantly, family. This team needed to come to grips that football would not be there forever. People will, the ones you will visit on the holidays, the friends you will call to hang out on the weekend, the mother and father that will always be there. The sooner they came to that realization, the better the team became. The love for the game goes beyond people. Its the passion that everyone strives to receive or earn in life. Some people just live for the game, and dont see anything else but football. Think of when you wanted to be an astronaut, or a firefighter. This is what its like for some football players. The unconditional Love they have for the game. Its almost like aving tunnel vision, a vision of greatness and a long wise journey. Theres also the pleasure of showing love for your teammates, a huge unity between brothers. Teammates give the strength to keep going. Even when the possible seems impossible, they find an impossible way to reach out and finish what they have started. To push forward even against all the odds. The guys you practice with everyday passing motivation through themselves to fight harder and win smarter. The love that will last forever is family. In this movie, family isnt necessarily a great thing due to all kinds of distractions and misplaced emotions. They all are poor and parents think some of there kids are failures. Some of these kids have decendents, when there father played for the same team they are playing for now. Living with expectations that they cant live up too. Some trying to earn a scholarship to get out of certain living situations. With the experiences these kids have gone through, these parents realize that they have the greatest potential . Seeing the love for there children, a love that will never go away. Family is what makes this happen. They show the good and they show the bad, but nobody will ever be there for more than your family. Experience is a life lesson that comes with time, It cant just be taught. This is exactly what these boys learned when they lost is the championship game. They found out that day that winning isnt everything . In fact, losing sometimes is the same as winning. The team realized that without losing, it would be impossible to win. Its a hard road to get to the top, but now those kids can say I experienced this in my life. This is what Emerson believed. That experience needs to be played out. You cant say you have learned anything without trying. .

The reading of the ammeter Essay Example
The reading of the ammeter Paper To find out how the length of a wire affects its resistance. Introduction- Metal is a good conductor of electricity. This is because their atoms contain small negatively charged particles called electrons. Some of these electrons are not fully attached to their atoms. This means that they can be easily detached and made to flow through the metal. This creates a current. If a wire has a low resistance, then more current will flow through the wire easily. Before the electric current was fully understood, people thought that the current flowed from the positive to the negative. This is opposite to the flow of electrons and is now know as the conventional current. An electrical current is a flow of an electric charge, so the amount of charge is will depend on the strength of the current. This is measured in Coulombs. The equation for this is: Charge= Current x Time Q = I x T Coulombs= Amperes x Seconds Factors affecting resistance Thickness- There are some factors that affect the resistance of a wire. The first of these things is the thickness of the wire. A thicker wire will have less resistance than a thin wire, because there are more paths for the electrons to flow through. Material- The material a wire is made from can also have an affect on the amount of Resistance it will have. Some wires may contain more atoms than other materials. This would mean that there would be an increase in the amount of collisions between the atoms and electrons. This would mean that there might be a higher resistance. Copper would have a higher resistance than ni-crome, as the ni-crome is a better conductor of electricity that copper. Temperature- The temperature of the wire will also affect the resistance that it has. If the wire has a high temperature, then the atoms in the wire will be vibrating quickly. This will make it harder for electrons to pass through. The more heat that there is, the more resistance that there is also. Ohm investigated how the temperature of a wire can affect its resistance. Ohms law states, If the temperature of a conductor does not alter, then the current which flows through it is proportional to the potential difference applied. The gradient of this line should always be constant. You get this line by- R=I/V Resistance= Current / Voltage Ohms = Amperes / Volts. If my experiment is accurate enough and I control all the factors that affect resistance, then I should get a graph that looks a bit like this. It will have a sloping line with a constant gradient. Length- The length of a wire can also have a large affect on its resistance. A long wire will have more resistance than a short wire. This is because it is easier for electrons to pass through the short wire than through the long wire. This means that there are fewer collisions between the moving atoms in the short wire than the long wire. Therefore there is more current flowing as there is less resistance. Resistance slows down the flow of electrons through the wire. Prediction- I think that the short thick wire will have a larger current flowing through it and therefore, it will have less resistance than a long thin wire. If there is a large current, then there is a low resistance. If there is a low resistance, then there is a large current. If there are more than 6 x 10(18) electrons flowing through it per second, then the current is 1 ampere, giving a lower resistance. Preliminary work- I am going to do some preliminary work. I think that this will help me work out the best way of doing my experiment. I think that it should help me to decided which way is best to measure my results and also how often I will need to measure the wire. I am going to try and take some measurements off the three different thicknesses of wire that are available to me. I am going to use ni-crome wire of the thickness 28swg, 24swg and 22swg. I am going to keep my voltage at 4 volts, so not to burn the wire out. I am going to take the current at 10cm, 50cm and 100cm. Here are my results: Thickness (S. W. G) Length (cm) Current (amps) Resistance (ohms). Plan- Apparatus- For my experiment, I will need the following items: Three 100cm lengths of ni-crome wire.Ã Power pack. Ammeter.Ã Meter rule. Crocodile clips.Ã Wires.Ã Power supply. Diagram- Safety precautions- As an extra safety precaution, I will not use more than four volts on my wire. If I use more than four volts, then I may burn the wire out. I will also, never put the clips with ten cm of each other. This is because if I put them to close on the wire, the current flowing through them will be to strong and the wire will melt. I will also make sure that I do not touch the wire when the clips are on them. Between the clips, the wire gets very hot and if I touch it, I may burn my self on it. Fair test- To make my experiment fair, I will have to try to control certain things through the experiment. I will need to try to keep the room temperature at a constant level. This will ensure that the atoms do not gain too much energy. I will need to always keep my voltage on four, to ensure that there isnt a different amount of current flowing through the wire. I will also need to try to keep my measurements as accurate as I can. I have decided to measure the wire every two cms. I think that this will be a good amount to use as it should give me a good range of results and there wont be big gaps between them. My result table may look very big, but once I put my results on to a graph, then I should get a detailed graph of my results. I will try to use the same wire each time that I do my experiment. This is because if one wire has been used more than another, then some of the electrons may have been burned out. This would cause a decrease in the resistance. Method-The first thing that I will need to do for my experiment, is to make sure that I have all of my equipment and I have a results table ready to put my results into. Once I am ready to start, I will turn the ammeter to 20m and the voltage on the power box to 4 volts. I will then turn the power on. I will take the first wire, 28swg and place the first crocodile clip at 0cm. I will then take the second clip, and I will place it at 10cm. I will take the reading of the ammeter and write it into my results table. I will then continue to move the clip along the wire, stopping every 2cm. I will carry this on until I reach 100cm.
